Basic Information of Area

The batticalo district is divided in to 14 administrative divisions. They are Manmunai North, Manmunai Pattu, Porativu Pattu, Manmunai West, Eravur Pattu, Karalai Pattu, Koralai Pattu West, Kattankudy, Manmunai South, Eruvil Pattu, Manmunai South West, Eravur Town, Koralai Pattu Central and Koralai Pattu North.

Most of the people engaged with Business, Industries and fisheries sector are occupied the second and third place respectively. Especially in the South East Asian Countries, Kattankudy is as high – density area and 100% Muslims are living.

Location

The division of Kattankudy Occupies the central part of the district .it covers land area of Approximately 2.56 Square   Km and of Inland water 1.33 Square   Km the division account for 0.15% of the district Total Land area.

Boundaries are

 North :   Manmunai North Divisional secretariat.

 East :   Bay of Bengal (Sea).

 South :   Manmunaipattu Divisional Secretariat.

 West :   Batticaloa Lagoon.

 The History name of this Village is called as Kattankudy so that a Business man who named by "kahthan" from Arabia got married a woman and lived in this village.

Kattankudy is of the administrative division among the 14 divisional secretariats coming under the purview of the District Secretariat, Batticaloa.

It is located in the A4 highway at 9KM from the batticaloa Town towards Kalmunai town and area with an extent of 6.502 Square KM. It is surrounded by sprawling sea and beautiful lagoon in its two boarders of East and West respectively and it has a population of 51217 comprising of 25262 males and 25955 females from 15607 families.

Kattankudy is naturally renowned for business. It should be noted that in reality as well most of the people are engaged in various business related activities along with other sectors like small industries, fisheries, significant labour force, government sector employees and others.

Kattankudy has 20 Schools, 33 pre-schools for catering necessary education along with various institution for moral development known as Madrasas and Arabic colleges for both male and female.

Further, there are almost all important service providing centers are located in Kattankudy for necessary facilitation both in private and government sector. Apart from the above, 52 mosques are spread all over the Kattankudy for the spiritual guidance and moral and ethical enhancement.

In fact, Kattankudy has a reputation for having high density of merely 100% Muslim population in the South East Asia.

Kattankudy [ (Tamil: காத்தான்குடி, Sinhalese: කාත්තාන්කුඩි) also transliterated as "Kathankudy" is a township in Sri Lanka, notable for being one of the most densely populated towns in South Asia.^{[citation needed]} Kattankudy is located along its eastern coastline, about 339 km (211 mi) away from Colombo. The township has an estimated population of 50,000, predominantly Muslims.^{[citation needed]}

Kattankudy is one of the many Muslim dominated towns in Sri Lanka. It is said that Kattankudy is the most densely populated town in Sri Lanka with nearly 50,000 residents, calculated at 6,726 inhabitants per square kilometer in 2012. On 3 August 1990, the Muslims of the Kattankudy faced one of most gruesome massacres in Sri Lanka’s recent history by the Tamil Tiger Terrorists group, LTTE where 147 men and boys were gunned down inside a mosque.

Most of the people are engaged in business, industries and fisheries. The division of Kattankudy occupies the central part of the district. It covers land area of approximately 2.56 km² (0.99 sq mi) and 1.33 km² (0.51 sq mi) of inland waterways, the division account for 0.15% of the district's total land area.

Etymology

The township got its name derived from the term Qahtanite (Arabic: قَحْطَانِي‎‎; transliterated: Qahtani) referring to the Arab tribe "Qahtan" which originates from the southern region of the Arabian Peninsula. Many Qahtani men who came as merchants, married the women in this town, and thus the township got its name, Kattankudy.

Kattankudy Mosque Massacre

Kattankudy Mosque Massacre was the killing of over 147 Muslim men and boys in a Mosque in Kattankudy by LTTE cadres on 3 August 1990. It took place when around 30 Tamil rebels raided four mosques in the town of Kattankudy, where over 300 people were prostrating in Isha prayers. The attack is widely attributed to LTTE, who denied their involvement in the massacre, and have never retracted that denial. The initial report put the death toll at around 100, but as many of the injured who were rushed to hospital succumbed to their injuries, the final death toll rose to over 147.

Tsunami 2004

Tsunami hit Kattankudy on 26 December 2004, with approximately 108 people died in Kattankudy and 93 persons are still listed as missing. Around 2,500 houses were damaged by the tsunami in Kattankudy.
